Not much to do about Gmail, i'm afraid: they did warn that ultimately they'd switch everyone to the new style. You can change the density of items, though, which help. (Click the cog icon.) I hated it for about a week and then got used to it. Still hate the dumbed-down feel of the big cartoonish icons, but oh well.
